8. Castles of Britain
Britain is strewn with ruins of castles,
rubble from the centuries of her existence. Castles are
tangible relics of a remarkable past, a lengthy heritage
etched in stone, as well as with the blood and sweat of
those who built, labored, fought, and died in their shadow.
Ruins stir up in us a profound awareness of those past
lives. Castles have a timelessness that is awe-inspiring.
That they have endured centuries of warfare and the effects
of weather is a testimony to the creativity and power of
their medieval owners. How many of us will have such
long-lasting success?
The author of this site is a former US Navy officer who was
stationed in Pembrokeshire, Wales where she fell in love with
castles. Find her story on the website. She has become a true
authority on castles not only getting a degree in the UK but
also authoring several books on the subject.

10. Glen
Colm-CilleF
Glen Folk Village was the brainchild
of Fr McDyer who was transferred to Glencolmcille in 1951.
He recognised immediately that the area suffered form lack
of employment and emigration. During the past 70 years, the
area had lost 60% of its population due to the root causes
of poor land, distance to any major centre and lack of
industry. Fr McDyer dtermined to do whatever he could to
break this cycle. Building the Folk Village Museum was the
start. This was an usual thing to do in Ireland at the time
since even famous landmarks are often ignored in some field
someplace. The Irish are getting a little better at
preserving their heritage now.
11. Isle of Iona
Iona became known as the "holy island"
where several kings from Scotland, Ireland and Norway chose
to be buried. St Colm-Cille was banished from Ireland in 563
so he and 12 companions set up a monastery on the Isle of
Iona. From there, they proceded to convert pagan Scotland
and the northern part of England to Christianity. At
present, the monastery is an ecumenical centre which very
active in Christian education, liturgy and outreach.
12. Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador on Canada's east
coast is an adventurers paradise. It appears to be a great
place to get away from it all although that could be
threatened sometime in the future by the booming oil
business there. Having been a "have not area" forever, it's
about time that good fortune arrived. The first settlers,
besides the native Indian population, were Irish peasants
who hid behind trees when it was time for the fishing boats
to go home to England.
